Wanting to lose weight is natural. Everyone would want to get rid of a few pounds if they could. A healthy diet and regular exercise are the best ways to lose weight. For some people, however, this isn't enough. They want to lose weight faster. This is exactly why we're deluded with fad diets. Fad diet inventors know this need well and they work to fill it. Enter the Paleo diet. Although this diet is still being debated as to whether it's a fad diet or not, it's decidedly among the most popular diets to come out. Is this diet right for you? Read on to find out!

Technically, the Paleo diet was invented by Walter L. Voegtlin who is a gastroenterologist. In 1975, Voegtlin had his book, The Stone Age Diet, published. Humans are carnivorous is the basic premise of this book. He said that eating a diet rich in meat dates all the way back to the Paleolithic era which is when agriculture first started to show up. He said it was primarily protein and fat with carbohydrates taking a small back seat. Voegtlin made this conclusion based on what he saw on his own treatment of a variety of dietary ailments (e.g., IBS, Crohn's disease). It is important to note that he is not a historian or an archaeologist.

Basically, the Paleo diet is patterned after what the early humans ate, or so what some people (who aren't experts in history or archaeology, by the way) believe. If people followed its general principles, they are likely to be healthier. People on this diet tend to lose weight, not to mention reduce their risk of diabetes and heart disease. Nonetheless, if you choose to go on the Paleo diet because you think it's historically accurate, you need to think again. The reality is that dieticians are the ones who have been building upon this diet for close to forty years. And here's another fact: those dieticians all are in it to sell books and make money.

In the Paleo diet, the foods consume are hunted and fished for. This is why this is a high meat and fish diet and low in carbs and plants. Depending on the Paleo diet version you choose to follow, you may not be allowed to eat any grains, and you're certain to not be allowed to eat anything processed. There are other diets that bear similarities to the Paleo diet (Atkins, for one) and they have been found to be very unhealthy. Still, eating natural food is something that people do when they want to lose weight. There are all sorts of reasons to try out the Paleo diet. It is rich in Omega-3s which are good for you. Moreover, it gives your immune system a huge boost. But then again, make sure you consult with your doctor prior to starting on the diet.
